Development objective is to increase agricultural productivity and incomes of smallholder farmers
The Kenya Agricultural Productivity and Agribusiness Project (KAPAP) is a Government of Kenya initiative funded by the World Bank. The project Development objective is to increase agricultural productivity and incomes of smallholder farmers from agricultural and agribusiness activities in the project area. The project activities contributed to these objectives by transforming and improving the performance of the agricultural technology systems, empowering men and women stakeholders and promoting the development of agribusiness in the project area.
WEWASAFO is involved in KAPAP activities with an objective of providing farmers with services that enhanced productivity in banana value chain as well as local poultry production including marketing. We operate in seven sub counties (Constituencies) in Kakamega County namely Kakamega North, Kakamega Central, Kakamega South, Kakamega East, Matete, Lugari, and Likuyani.
The KAPAP program on banana value chain is being implemented by WEWASAFO firm in 28 locations while meat value chain focusing on local poultry was implemented by WEWASAFO firm in 30 locations of Kakamega County. In the last phase of the program ending 2015, WEWASAFO was able to organize farmers into Common interest group (C.I.G) reaching a total of 112 C.W.GS on banana value chain and 30 C.I.Gs reaching a total of 120 Common working groups (C.W.Gs) on meat value chain.
On the banana value chain, a total of 3 cooperative societies have been formed, while on poultry value chain, 4 cooperative societies are now operational.
WEWASAFO was able to address issues on local poultry production systems, housing and disease control in poultry using diverse reference materials from the C.S.U, WEWASAFO resource center and service providers’ resource materials and expertise where experience sharing and case studies were useful during the process with both farmers and Service providers having a great opportunity and platform for sharing practical experiences in both poultry and banana production and as such best practices were adopted.
To effectively ensure that farmers are effectively facilitated financially, WEWASAFO has engaged in to a very aggressive engagement with credit providers in the region who offer financial literacy training’s to the farmers so as to to ensure that they get facts on how to effectively manage finances before they are advanced credit by these financial institutions.
